Born 1785. Died 1856 - Soldier and administrator.

Entered the army in 1799, lost his left hand at the Battle of Ligny in 1815. Entered Parliament in 1820 as MP for Durham. Held the posts of Secretary of War, Chief Secretary for Ireland and was appointed Governor General of India in 1844. Succeeded Duke of Wellington as Commander-in-Chief in 1852 but was demoted due to early failures in the Crimean War.
