Emily Jane Bronte, born July 30th 1818, died December 19, 1848, was a British novelist and poet, best remembered for her only novel "Wuthering Heights".
Emily is regarded as the epitome of the talented writer who died after a short blaze of genius, and is generally considered the most gifted of the
writer sisters, even though Charlotte published the more critically and commercially successful novel, 'Jane Eyre' .She was the fifth of six children, and the second eldest of the three surviving Bronte sisters, being younger than Charlotte and older than Anne.
She initially published under the male pen name of Ellis Bell.
She was born in Thornton, Yorkshire, the daughter of Patrick Bronte a vicar, and Maria Branwell. In 1824 the family moved to Haworth, Yorkshire where their literary talents developed. The three sisters and their brother Patrick invented imaginary kingdoms which featured in stories they wrote. In 1842 Emily began working as a governess at Miss Patchett's Ladies Academy at Law Hill School near Halifax, but left after six months due to feeling homesick. After this she attended a private school in Brussels with her sister Charlotte. The sisters later tried to open a school at their home, but failed to attract any pupils.
Emily, Charlotte and Anne published a joint collection of their poems in 1846 titled "Poems by Curer, Acton and Ellis Bell'. The sisters used male pseudonyms as a way to evoid prejudice against female writers at the time. In 1847 Emily published her novel, 'Wuthering Heights' as two volumes of a three volume set. The last volume was 'Agnes Grey', written by Anne Bronte. At the time of its publication, Wuthering Heights received mixed reviews from critics, but soon went on to become a best-seller. Charlotte Bronte then edited and published the book under Emily's real name in 1850 as a stand alone novel.
Emily's health, like her siblings, had been weakened by the harsh local climate, and she caught a cold during the funeral of her brother in September which led to tuberculosis. She refused any medical help, and died on December 19, 1848 at the age of thirty. She was buried in the family vault at Haworth church.
