Contributed songs and ballads to Allan Ramsay’s Tea Table Miscellany. Joined the Jacobite Rising of 1745, escaped to Rouen but returned to Scotland in 1749. Also wrote The Episode of the Thistle. Best known for his ballad The Braes of Yarrow.
