Began as a lyric poet before turning to writing novels. Won the Femina Vie Heureuse and Tait Black Memorial prizes with her Adam’s Breed (1926). The Well of Loneliness (1928) which dealt with female homosexuality was banned in Great Britain and prosecuted for obscenity.
