Trained as a chemist before joining his father’s steelmaking firm, Hadfields. Discovered manganese in 1882, used for tramway and railway trackwork. Researched into silicon steel and armour-piercing projectile steels. His hardwork and talents made Hadfields into one of the world’s leading steel firms. Published a number of books on metallurgy and the development of special steels.
