Studied English literature at Trinity College, Cambridge. Emigrated the the USA in 1954. His first collection of poems Fighting Terms was published in 1954. Other volumes included The Passage of Joy (1982), about is homosexuality, The Man with Night Sweats (1992) and his final book of poetry Boss Cupid (2000).
