Read history at Selwyn College, Cambridge. Elected to Parliament in 1970 as MP for Lewisham West. Held various minor positions in the government of Edward Heath. Chaired the Conservative Party from 1983 to 1985. Became Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food in 1989 moving to become Secretary of State for the Environment in 1993. Has been a backbencher since the Labour victory of 1997.
