Born 1844. Died 1931 - Engineer and builder of astronomical instruments.

Studied civil engineering at Trinity College, Dublin. Established his reputation by building one of the world’s largest reflecting telescopes in Melbourne, Australia. Developed an optical gun sight and the submarine periscope. Elected FRS in 1883 and knighted in 1887. Retired from business in 1925 at the age of 81.
