William Grove

Born 1811. Died 1896 - Welsh physicist.
Abandoned his law career due to ill health turning to electrochemistry. Invented a new form of electric cell (the Grove cell), also a gas battery and an early form of filament lamp. Returned to law and became a judge in the High Court of Justice. One of the original members of the Chemical Society. Elected FRS in 1840 and knighted in 1872.
