Was governor of his grandfather’s bank from 1830 to 1843. Entered Parliament as MP for the City of London (1830-43). Retired from banking and politics and turned to writing. Published History of Greece (1846-56) and Plato and the other Companions of Socrates (1865). Buried in Westminster Abbey.
