Lady Jane Grey was born in Leicestershire (Bradgate Park) in 1537, she was the eldest daughter of Henry Grey Marquess of Dorset, and Lady Frances Brandon, who was the daughter of Henry VIII's sister, Mary. Her upbringing was strict, although she had a good education with studies in languages, Greek, and Latin. Her mother was cold towards her, and at the age of just ten she was sent to live with Henry VIII's latest wife Katherine Parr, she was then given the maternal affection she craved for, whilst she was there she became acquainted with her Cousins, Edward, Mary and Elizabeth.
Elizabeth and Mary had been declared as illegitimate by their father Henry VIII, although he later re-instated them in their right to the succession to the throne, he also noted that should Edward, Elizabeth or Mary die without an heir, the succession would then pass to the heirs of his younger sister Mary Tudor, Queen of France.
After Henry VIII's death, Edward ascended to the throne, however, at just fifteen he became ill, he wrote a will declaring that although Mary should be next in line, she was a Catholic, and Jane should instead should succeed him, as she was a Protestant. Edward died in 1553, and Lady Jane Grey was pronounced as Queen, this was not a popular choice with the people who called for Mary to become Queen. Determined, Mary rallied support and they marched in vast numbers to London. Mary was proclaimed as Queen at the cross in Cheapside. Jane was imprisoned in the Tower Of London, and both she and her husband were accused of High Treason. Jane was executed on Tower Green in 1554, where she was beheaded at the age of 17. She is buried with her husband in the Chapel in Tower Green. Her reign as Queen was the shortest ever reign, and lasted for just nine days.
