Eric Gill

Born 1882. Died 1940 - Sculptor, engraver and writer.
Trained as an architect which he gave up to become a calligrapher, letter-cutter and monumental mason. Started producing sculpture – his first public success being Mother and Child (1912). Other sculptures include the Stations of the Cross, a number of war memorials, the huge figure Mankind (1928 at the Tate) and Prospero and Ariel (1931 at Broadcasting House, London). He created type designs including Perpetua, Bunyan and Gill Sans-serif and wrote numerous books.
