Studied medicine and travelled widely as a ship's surgeon. Superintendent of William Cecil’s gardens for 20 years. His own London garden was famous for its rare plants. Wrote The Herball, or general histoire of plantes (1597), famous for its detailed description of plants and the folklore it contained.
