Born 1892. Died 1981 - English novelist.
Studied botany at the Royal College of Science, London. His first novel Lady into Fox (1922) won the Hawthornden prize and the James Tait Black Memorial prize. Literary editor of the New Statesmen (1932-34). Joined the RAF in 1939 and used his experiences to write War in the Air (1941).
