Studied at London and Cambridge universities. Help to found the Working Men’s College in London. Became famous as a philologist and editor of English texts. Founded many societies including the Early English Text society, the Chaucer society, the New Shakespeare society and the Shelley society. Edited the Philologist Society’s dictionary which later became the Oxford English Dictionary.
