Made professional stage debut in 1932 in Birmingham. Appeared in West End, London in 1943. Contracted to MGM she made her film debut in Goodbye Mr Chips (1939). Won Academy Award for Mrs Miniver (1942). Other films included Random Harvest (1942) and That Forsyte Woman (1960); her last film being The Happiest Millionaire (1967).
