A Scottish physicist and mathematician, he is best known for developing the Kelvin scale of absolute temperature measurement (1848). He was chief consultant on the laying of the first submarine Atlantic cable (1857-58) and his wealth came from numerous inventions of electrical instruments. He was created 1st Baron Kelvin of Largs in 1892, and was buried in Westminster Abbey beside Sir Isaac Newton.
