Born 1624 (Fenny Drayton - Leics) . Died 1691 - Religious leader, founder of the Quakers.

Apprenticed to a shoemaker. Rebelled against state control of Church of England. Formed a group called the Friends of Truth, later known as the Society of Friends then Quakers. Refused to attend Anglican services or pay tithes. Visited Barbados, Jamaica, America, Holland and Germany, often accompanied by William Penn. In 1661 he founded the American Quaker Colony of Pennsylvania. Continued as a travelling preacher until his death.
