Studied French at New College, Oxford. Served in the Royal Marines. First novel was The Collector (1963). Became well-known for his subsequent novels The Magus (1965) and The French Lieutenant’s Woman (1969). Later books included Daniel Martin (1977) and A Maggot (1985). Also wrote a collection of short stories The Ebony Tower (1974).
