Born 1891. Died 1974 - Physicist and Nobel Prize winner.


Studied at Manchester, Berlin and Cambridge. Worked on radioactivity with Ernest Rutherford. Suggested that radiation was due to a neutral particle, named the particle neutron. Awarded 1935 Nobel Prize for physics for this discovery. During WWII worked on the atomic bomb. Elected RFS in 1927 and knighted in 1945.
