Elected Conservative MP for Stamford in 1853. Strong opponent of disestablishment of Irish Church. Foreign Secretary in 1878. On Disraeli’s death became leader of Conservatives in 1881 and Prime Minister in 1885. Resigned as Foreign Secretary in 1900, retired from public life in July 1902.
