Born 1777. Died 1844 - Scottish poet and journalist.
Studied law but developed interest in reading and writing poetry. Published The Pleasures of Hope in 1799. Contributed articles to The Edinburgh Encyclopaedia. Lectured on poetry and edited The New Monthly Magazine. Best known poems include The Battle of the Baltic and Ye Mariners of England. Buried in Westminster Abbey.
