Educated at Newnham College, Cambridge. Published Degrees of Freedom (1965), a study of Iris Murdoch’s novel. Third novel The Virgin in the Garden (1978) made her reputation. Possession (1990) won the Booker Prize. Awarded CBE in 1990 and DBE in 1999. Elder sister of Margaret Drabble.
