With Don Whillans put up many original routes on rock faces in the Peak District. Made first British descent of west face of Petit Dru in Alps. Reached summit of Kangchenjunga. Pioneered series of difficult routes on sea cliffs of Gogarth. Published autobiography in 1967 and awarded MBE in 1975.
