Born 1888 - Calcutta, India. Died 1988 - English politician, a founder of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament.


Born into a missionary family. Converted to socialism by an interview with Keir Hardie. Joined Independent Labour Party. Militant pacifist imprisoned during WWI. Became MP from 1929-31, again 1950-64. Wrote over 20 books including autobiographical volumes. Died six months before 100th birthday.
