Studied at Oxford and Leipzig. Appointed musical director of BBC and conductor of newly formed BBC Symphony Orchestra in 1930. Retired from BBC in 1950 and became conductor in chief of London Philharmonic Orchestra until 1957. Conducted regularly until 1981.
