Thomas Bewick

Born 1753. Died 1828 - English wood engraver.
He was an apprentice to Ralph Beilby, a Newcastle engraver, and became his partner in 1776. He earned recognition for his woodcuts for Gay’s Fables (1779), and other works include History of Quadrupeds (1790) and History of British Birds (1797-1804). He later produced Aesop’s Fables (1818) with his son, Robert Elliott who became his partner in 1812. Bewick’s Swan was named in his honour shortly after his death.
