Born 1836. Died 1901 - English novelist and social reformer.
He studied at King’s College London and at Cambridge, then spent a few years in Mauritius as a professor before turning to literature. His works include All Sorts and Conditions of Men (1882) and Children of Gibeon (1886) describing conditions in the slums of East London. Further novels advocating social reform resulted in the establishment of the People’s Palace, London (1887) for popular recreation.
