He published his first novel The Man from the North in 1898, and in 1902 he moved to Paris for 10 years engaging in journalistic and creative writing. Further novels include Anna of the Five Towns (1902), The Old Wive’s Tale (1908), The Card (1911), Lord Raingo (1926) and the Clayhanger series. His Journals were published posthumously.
