Born 1774. Died 1842 - Scottish anatomist, surgeon and neurophysiological pioneer.


After studying at Edinburgh University he moved to London in 1804, where he was a proprietor of an anatomy school and rose to prominence as a surgeon. He is remembered for his pioneering research into neurophysiology, set out in his Idea of a New Anatomy of the Brain (1811). The type of facial paralysis ‘Bells Palsy’ is named after him.
