Born 1879 - Maple, Ontario, Canada. Died 1964 - British newspaper magnate and politician.
By 1910 he had made his fortune out of the amalgamation of Canadian cement mills. He came to Great Britain and entered parliament in 1911 becoming private secretary to Bonar Law. In 1919 he turned to journalism and took Fleet Street by storm, taking over the Daily Express and making it a worldwide success. He founded the Sunday Express (1921) and bought the Evening Standard (1929). His works include Politicians and the Press (1925) and The Decline and Fall of Lloyd George (1963).
