After receiving his degree in Medicine and Science in 1896 from Cambridge University, he began his studies of the oxygenation of blood. He used himself many times as a test subject, including spending seven days in a glass chamber to calculate the minimum quantity of oxygen required to survive. He also studied the physiology of oxygenation at extreme altitudes, with expeditions to the peak of Tenerife (1910), Monte Rosa (1911) and the Andes (1922).
