After studying at Stirling University, he made an impact with his first novel, The Wasp Factory (1984), a controversial study of insanity. A subsequent novel The Crow Road (1992) was of the same theme. He is best known for his science fiction novels including The State of the Art (1989), Against a Dark Background (1993) and Look to Windward (2000).
