Born 1889. Died 1961 - English X-ray crystallographer.


He studied at Cambridge, and then with Sir William Bragg’s team at University College London (1920-21), before lecturing at Leeds University (1928) where he held the new chair of biomolecular structure from 1945. In 1926 he began taking x-ray diffraction photographs using natural protein fibres, and his pioneering work was followed most notably by Linus Pauling.
