Born 1795. Died 1842 - English educationist and scholar.
After being educated at Oxford, he was appointed headmaster of Rugby in 1828 and reformed the school system, introducing sports and tackling bullying. He was the inspiration for Thomas Hughes’s novel Tom Brown’s Schooldays. His sons were Matthew (poet and critic) and Thomas (literary scholar), and his granddaughter was the novelist Mary Augusta Ward.
