After pursuing a career as a police detective, he became famous as a top cricket commentator from 1946 retiring eventually in 1980. With his Hampshire accent he was described as the voice of summer, and his commentaries were always full of poetic imagery. He was a prolific writer of cricket and was also The Guardian’s chief cricket correspondent from 1968-1980.
