An English physicist at Cambridge and then Edinburgh University, he won the Nobel Prize for physics in 1947 for his contribution towards exploring the ionosphere. He revealed a new layer of electrically charged particles in the upper atmosphere – the Appleton Layer. Fundamental to wireless communication and radar.
