Born 1782. Died 1850 - Scottish historical painter.
Famous as a Scottish historical painter, he started out travelling through Russia (1805-1814) painting local subject matters, but these were not so popular. He returned to Scotland to paint, and also began illustrating scenes from his friend Sir Walter Scott’s writings. Among his works are Circassian Captives (1816), The Black Dwarf (1827) and Slave-Market (1838).
