Born 1801. Died 1892 - English astronomer and geophysicist.


A distinguished astronomer, he became Lucasian Professor of Mathematics (1826), and Plumian Professor of Astronomy and director of the Cambridge Observatory (1828). He was appointed Astronomer Royal and director of the Greenwich Observatory, and later achieved worldwide acceptance of the Greenwich zero meridian. He was knighted in 1872.
