Politically active from a young age, he joined the Irish Nationalist Party, Sinn Fein, the political wing of the IRA. In 1978 he was elected vice-president of Sinn Fein and later became president. In 1982 he was elected to the Northern Island Assembly and in 1983 to the UK Parliament. His publications include autobiographies Falls Memories (1982), Cage Eleven (1990) and Before the Dawn (1996). Other works are Politics of Irish Freedom (1986), Pathway to Peace (1988) and An Irish Voice: The Quest for Peace (1997).
