An English writer, through his friendship with fellow writer E M Forster he became private secretary to the Maharajah of Chhokrapur, which resulted in Hindoo Holiday (1932). From 1935 to 1959 he was literary editor of The Listener. Further works include My Dog Tulip (1956) and We Think the World of You (1960).
