Lifelong friend of David Livingstone, helped finance second and third expeditions. Set up small oil refinery at Alfreton in 1848. Later began manufacture of naphtha and lubrication oils. Produced paraffin oil and solid paraffin at plant at Bathgate. Appointed president of Anderson’s College in 1868. Elected to Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1873.
