Educated at University of Manchester. Notable work on fossil fish. Made 30 expeditions abroad making collections throughout Europe, USA, Middle East and South America. Produced over 600 publications including Catalogue of Fossil Fishes in the British Museum. Remembered for his part in the Piltdown Man controversy. Knighted in 1924.
