Born 1588. Died 1667 - English poet and pamphleteer.


Studied at Magdalen College, Oxford. Imprisoned for writing Abuses Stript and Shipt (1613). The satirical Wither’s Motto led to another prison sentence. Best known poem is Fair Virtue or the Mistress of Philarete (1622). As a Puritan he lost his postion and property in the Restoration.
