Born 1785. Died 1854 - Scottish critic and essayist.
Studied at Glasgow University and Magdalen College, Oxford where he won the Newdigate Prize for poetry. Wrote The Isle of Palms (1821), The Magic Mirror (1812) and The City of the Plague (1816). In 1817 helped launch Blackwood’s Magazine. Wrote short stories and published two novels.
