Walton Sextuplets Born
Liverpool, Merseyside The 18th of November 1983 AD
Sextuplets are of course a rare phenomenon, but even rarer are sextuplets all of the same sex. In 1983 when Janet Walton gave birth to Hannah, Lucy, Ruth, Sarah, Kate and Jennifer they were the only surviving all-female sextuplets in the world.
The girls were born via caesarean section in Liverpool ās Oxford Street Hospital; their weights ranged from 2lb 1oz to 3lb 8oz. Parents John and Janet had undergone fertility treatment for several years, and had just been given the green light to adopt when the 13th cycle came good ā in spectacular fashion.
For a time the girls were big news and the family was able to agree sponsorship deals that included a shoe company supplying footwear until the six were 12, a house-swap into a suitably big place in Wallasey , much of the baby equipment needed, and the loan of an estate car from Ford. Happily they grew up healthy, and as well as providing their father with a new role (which laudably included becoming family cook) they also brought him a new career strand ā as an after-dinner speaker relating what it is like to live in a house with seven females. Scary Iād guess.
