Although the village of Bradfield is officially part of the nearby City of Sheffield – no bad thing as it has become one of the North’s most vibrant places - the Peak District countryside into which it just sneaks belies the fact. It’s also hard to think of the place as a village, given that it is divided into two distinct settlements, High and Low Bradfield, and that the population of more than 14000 makes it the biggest parish in the country. In earlier times the area had some strategic importance, which explains the remains of the Norman fortification on High Bradfield’s hill, where the splendid 15th century church of St Nicholas also stands, an exuberant gothic pile complete with gargoyles. With such a population the place enjoys the amenities of a town, and this being Yorkshire those include a cricket ground and a bowling green (and being England several pubs). There are plenty of old and pretty stone cottages particularly in the upper settlement, and cosy streets bordered with winding walls, interspersed with some more notable structures among them what was once a watchtower. The countryside around the village, though designated as moorland, is greener than that often implies, with patches of woodland and hedges to soften the sightlines, and no shortage of reservoirs built to serve Sheffield which stands a couple of miles to the east. Their attractiveness benefits Bradfield, and the lower village itself has the River Loxley running through it, crossed by a bridge there. One of the reservoirs did major damage to the lower village in 1874 when its then scandalously ill-constructed dam burst.
