Though proudly part of South Yorkshire, the little market town of Bawtry is on the very edge of the county, with Nottinghamshire a short stroll to the south, and slightly further afield to the east lies Lincolnshire. The A1 runs just to the west of the town, and the M18 is only a short drive to the north. The settlement grew around a crossing of the river Idle, the Great North Road going through the town to use this crossing place, with the inevitable growth of inns and other hostelries and businesses to service the traffic in the coaching era. Bawtry was certainly settled in Roman times, and probably dates further back still. When the Romans ruled the land it became an important staging post on Ermine Street, and over the centuries its significance as a transport hub continued. Until the building of the Doncaster Canal in the 18th century Bawtry was a busy river port, and its beautiful church, St Nicholas’s, stands on Wharf Street. The port operated into the 19th century, but by then the canal had taken much of its business away. The town has retained a lot of its character as first the river traffic declined, leaving the area around the church relatively untouched, and then the river itself was diverted to allow for the East Coast mainline to be engineered effectively here. St Nicholas’s church was founded in 1190, 23 years before the town gained its market charter, and another building of great antiquity to note is the White Hart, built in 1689. A further historical note should be made here: William Bradford, one of the Pilgrim Fathers, was born nearby, and there is a school named in his memory in Bawtry. Transport remains important for the town, as Robin Hood Doncaster-Sheffield Airport, which has seen rapid expansion over the last few years, is just to the north of the town, providing employment and passing trade for the place.
