Stockton-on-Tees is a large town in north east England which is actually split between County Durham and North Yorkshire. A number of smaller towns such as Thornaby and Yarm are included n the borough, making it larger than Middlesbrough in terms of population and square miles. Originally an Anglo Saxon settlement, Stockton was built on high ground near to the northern bank of the river Tees. The manor was created in 1138 and was purchased by Bishop Pudsey of Durham in 1189, A market charter was granted to the town in 1310 by another bishop of Durham, Bishop Bek.. Stockton Castle is first mentioned in 1376 but was captured by the Scots in 1644 and held by them for two years until Oliver Cromwell ordered its destruction at the end of the Civil War. The site is now occupied by the Castlegate Shopping Centre. Stockton-on-Tees is probably most famous for its association with the Stockton and Darlington Railway, on which the first steam hauled passenger service ran in 1825. The birth of the Age of Steam and the running of George Stephenson’s Locomotive on the Stockton and Darlington Railway had an immeasurable impact on the transportation networks of the world. Originally 26 miles long, the railway was built to connect inland coalmines to Stockton where coal could be shipped. The town houses the world’s oldest railway station and is often referred to as the birthplace of the railways Once renowned for its heavy industry, this declined during the twentieth century much of the town has since been redeveloped and there are further plans for extensive environmental regeneration and development of the north shore of the Tees to include new offices, housing which will create a city in the heart of the Tees valley. It’s heavy industry gone, the area now is home to many service industries and will no doubt attract many more over the coming years.
