Great Ayton is a village in North Yorkshire, situated on the edge of the North York Moors in Hambleton. It lies at the foot of the Cleveland Hills beneath Easby Moor and Roseberry Topping while through it runs the river Leven, a tributary of the river Tees, joining the two centres of High Green and Low Green. The name is believed to have derived from the ‘ea’ meaning river and ‘tun’ meaning town. The village was a centre for weaving, tanning and brewing industries during the 18th and 19th centuries. British navigator and explorer Captain Cook, moved to the village with his family when he was eight years old and lived there until he was sixteen. His father, James Snr, was a Scottish migrant farm labourer, his mother Grace, a local Yorkshire girl. They worked on one of the local farms owned by Thomas Skottowe, who financed young James’ schooling. James stayed on the farm for several years afterwards helping his father, who by now was farm manager, before leaving for Slaith. The family home, built by James’ father in 1755, was dismantled in 1934 and shipped to Australia, with each stone numbered so that it could be reconstructed exactly. In its place stands an obelisk made from granite taken from Point Hicks, the first land sighted by Cook in Australia. Cook’s Monument is a 51ft high obelisk on top of Easby Moor, erected in 1827.
